Two charts, because spring and fall answer different questions: in spring, the chance that a frost still comes after a date; in fall, the chance that the first frost has already come before it. NOAA publishes these odds from 10% to 90%, so the lines stop there. ◆ marks the actual date in each recent year.

What these dates mean

The 285 days between the 50% dates in the Corcoran area define the span where light frost odds are even. February 15 is the 50% date for light frost in spring and November 27 is the 50% date for light frost in fall; these dates are not frost dates but mark the median odds. The hard-frost 50% dates are January 16 in spring and December 8 in fall, when a 28 °F event has a 50 % chance.

For a cautious plan, tender crops should be set out after March 10, which carries only a 10 % chance of a later frost, and should be finished before November 12, which has only a 10 % chance that a frost has arrived earlier. Planting on January 17 or harvesting on December 13 involves a 90 % chance of frost and is a gamble.

A hard frost at 28 °F can damage plants more severely than a light frost at 32 °F, so its probability is a critical consideration.

How to read the probabilities

The dates are probabilities from 30 years of weather, not a forecast for this year.

  • Spring: "10% after March 10" means that in about one spring out of ten a frost still happens after that date. The 90% date is the earliest: a frost after it happens in most years.
  • Fall: "10% before November 12" means that in about one fall out of ten the first frost arrives before that date.
  • 50% is the typical date: half of the years are earlier, half are later.
  • A light frost (32°F) damages tender plants; a hard frost (28°F) also stops most hardy vegetables.
